To be a good coach, you need to instill excitement and focus. Pizza parties and the like go far in helping a team bond. Most importantly, keep in mind that baseball is just a sport and the world will not end if you do not win.
Make sure you grip the ball properly and toss it correctly when you’re learning how to pitch the ball. First, put your middle finger where the seam is. Next, place the other seam directly under your thumb. This will let you grip the ball properly to increase accuracy, speed and distance.
Be aware of the location of each baseball player. Having a good idea of the location of each player during the game is how you can avoid most collisions. There is a high risk for head injuries to occur whenever players collide. The best way to avoid collisions is to let everyone know when you intend to go after a baseball.
When coaching baseball, set a practice schedule that allows players to make their own plans and set goals. The right type of practice should have 10 minutes of warmup time and 20 minutes of hitting drills. Once that is completed you can expect running and other team drills. End the practice with a ten-minute drill on defense for specific positions, then cool down. After that have a team meeting and that’s all there is to it.
It’s a good idea to start breaking your glove in well before baseball season starts. It is great to have scored a new glove, but you need to have it ready for game time. Throw and catch the ball to make a nice pocket for the ball. Use a leather softener on it. Put pressure on the weave in the glove. Gloves that have been broken in do much better on the field.
To get the best stretch possible while playing first, place your foot on the base right below the hand you throw with. Reach towards the throw, step with your opposite foot and keep your other foot on base.
Catching a grounder shouldn’t be done by a cross-body reach. Shuffle left or right to get the gloved hand ahead of the ball. If you don’t do this, you may make an error.
When you are up to bat, never be afraid of sacrificing yourself. Being a team player may require it of you. Your teammates will respect that you are giving up your at bat for the team. It doesn’t seem to have the same flare as hitting a homer, but it could help win the game.
